Thessaloniki International Wine & Spirits Competition
About Thessaloniki International Wine & Spirits Competition
The Wine Producers Association of Northern Greece Vineyard organizes the only International Wine and Spirituous Beverages of Vitivinicultural Origin Competition held in Greece. The Competition’s main objective is to present the variety of international quality wine and spirits production to professionals and the general public and acquaint foreign wine professionals with the exciting developments in Greek wine production.
During the Competition which is organized under the auspices of the O.I.V. (International Organization of Vine and Wine), Greek and foreign wine tasters (enologists, sommeliers and journalists) taste wines and spirits from Greece and abroad for 3 days. The public has the opportunity to taste the award-winning wines and spirits at a tasting event that is held every year after the end of the competition while winners receive the awards at an official awards ceremony.
The ‘Thessaloniki International Wine and Spirits Competition’ is constantly growing and so is the amount of participating wine and spirits producers and the quality of the samples submitted, giving strong evidence that is has become a major institution for Greek wine and Spirits. Furthermore, the medals of the competition are acknowledged by both professional and consumers in Greece and abroad.
World class wine and spirits professionals, like Tom Stevenson, Stephen Spurrier, Steven Daniel and Roger Dagorn, have accepted the invitation of the Wine Producers Association of the Northern Greece Vineyard to judge at the Thessaloniki International Wine and Spirits Competition. Turning important people into dedicated ambassadors in just a few days could well be the ultimate proof that Thessaloniki’s Wine and Spirits Competition is now an integral part of the Modern Greek Wine and Spirits Renaissance.

Established in 1990, it is the only wine-judging event in North America that is based on Terroir. Judges taste wines with other wines of the same appellation. Thus, with cross-regional competition removed, the inherent quality of wines can be seen without the influences that sometimes eclipse even a wine of very high quality. GHA recognizes wine entries that best exemplify the terroir of their respective viticultural areas, and acknowledges its influence on wine quality. A medal in this wine competition not only gives your wine prestige and selling power, it adds talking points in your retail room. A win in Grand Harvest can put your wine into a whole new sales category.

Local Drinkers: Closing the Gap in Hong Kong
Debra Meiburg gives her insights into the Hong Kong market, the first of a number of articles written by our competition director.
“As anyone with a basic understanding of Hong Kong demographics can tell you, trying to build a sustainable wine market on expats is like designing a children’s wear line that only fits one year-olds- there’s a built-in limit to the consumer base, and it’s an ever-changing one at that. “
